The Cuckoo's Nest Guest House offers bed and breakfast accommodation in Makhado (Louis Trichardt), in the Limpopo province.

The Cuckoo's Nest Guest House (CNGH) is so called because of the beautiful cuckoo birds that frequent the area. There are seven which are endemic to the area (not all seen) especially the Red Chested Cuckoo, (Piet my Vrou) which can be heard calling at all hours in the summer months. The cuckoo never builds its own nest, but lays its eggs in other birds' nests, so that the nest owner can look after the fledgling. Come stay with us, we will look after you.

CNGH is conveniently situated two km from Louis Trichardt on the Thohoyandou road. (R524). It is nearby to shops and three restaurants in town.

It is set on an eight-hectare plot of which two hectares is beautiful tropical garden, the balance of which consists of a bush camp which is home to six nyala. A section of the large grounds contains an orchard of macadamia nut trees, which give off a wonderful aroma, when flowering from August to September.

The house has six, spacious en suite bedrooms, which each having panoramic views of the beautiful Soutpansberg mountains.

Enjoy a walk in the tranquil gardens and view the feeding of the Nyala at sunset, or spot any of the numerous birds which frequent the many trees of the region.

The guest house is closely situated to the Kruger National Park - 130km from the Punda Maria gate or 185km from the Pafuri Gate. Other nearby attractions include the many local wildlife and nature reserves, Mapungubwe National Park, which is a world heritage site and the Ben Lavin just south of Louis Trichardt. The Blouberg Nature reserve has one of the largest breeding colonies of the Cape Vulture and is situated 90 km from Louis Trichardt, past Vivo.

CNGH Facilities include:

Rooms

Piet my Vrou (Luxury Family room): Consists of one queen and double size bed. Being on the first floor the room opens onto the north facing balcony through wooden double doors which are secured with trelli doors. The room is equipped with flat screen TV with select DSTV channels and tea and coffee facilities and a mini fridge. The en suit spacious bathroom, has a shower and two hand basins and opens onto the rear balcony through two double wooden doors. There are eight spacious built in cupboards which will be suitable for the longer-term guests. Free Wi-Fi.

Jacobin (Luxury Double room): This room, on the first floor opens onto the north facing balcony through wooden double doors which are secured with trelli doors. It has a queen size bed, flat screen TV with select DSTV channels and tea and coffee facilities and a mini fridge. The bathroom has a shower / bath combination. The outside doors are secured with trelli-doors. This room has four spacious built in cupboards and a small work station suitable for the working guests. Free Wi-Fi

Levalliant's (Double room): This room, a somewhat smaller room, on the first floor opens onto the north facing balcony through wooden double doors which are secured with trelli doors. It has a queen bed, flat screen TV with select DSTV channels and tea and coffee facilities and a mini fridge. It has an antique kiaat cupboard. The bathroom has a shower and hand basin. The room has a beautiful wooden floor. Free Wi-Fi

Great Spotted (Luxury Double room): This room, on the first floor opens onto the north facing balcony through wooden double doors which are secured with trelli doors. It has a queen size bed, flat screen TV with select DSTV channels and tea and coffee facilities and a mini fridge. The bathroom has a shower bath combination. Diderik's (Luxury Family room): This room is situated on the second floor and is accessed on the southern facing side of the house off the large balcony on the first floor. The room is equipped with two double size beds, small kitchenette, flat screen TV with select DSTV channels and tea and coffee facilities and a mini fridge, small work station, built in cup boards and a large bathroom with a shower. Klaas's (Luxury Double room): Klaas's is detached from main house, on a first floor with a large room with queen bed, built in cupboards, work station and en suite bathroom with a shower. The room has air-conditioning, flat screen TV with select DSTV channels and tea and coffee facilities, small work station and a mini fridge. Free Wi-Fi

Functions

The nest lends itself to small to medium sized functions due to the large “braai” area (entertainment area) , pool and sitting room area with a large bar and pool table. Ideal for birthday parties, weddings or any other celebrations.
Small conferences can be pre-arranged with a projector and screen available.

Outdoor activities

Having a large garden area, guests are welcome to explore the paths amongst the numerous trees and study the small Macadamia orcahard. The nest has access to a large area in the Soutpansberg mountains where guided walking or hiking trails can be arranged. These can be either "easy" or "vigorous" long walks. Or for the less active a sundowner outing can be arranged on a spot with a magnificent view of the mountains looking north to the Zimbabwe border.

The guest house is suitable for overnighting of cyclists, especially for the popular Kremetart cycle challenge. With a large secure parking area guests be can rest assured that their equipment will be safe. There is a marked mountain biking trail in the forestry area on the southern slopes of the Soutpansberg mountains six km from the nest.
